Sorry about this, but apparently Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami is back on for next Thursday, and is planned to be at Janet's house presented by yours truly.

I hope that is okay with everyone!

Restless by William Boyd for October Book Club

As September's meeting has been cancelled, there are only three of us available and only one who has read the book, we have dithered over whether to do this month's book next month (Kafka by the Shore by Murakami) or just do next month's book (Restless by William Boyd) as planned at Janet's house on the 11th of Oct.

As so many of you are away and might already have dismissed reading Kafka and started onto Restless, probably it is best if we do Restless. Any objections?

For those who want to discuss Kafka, could we have a special Kafka coffee meeting in Lincoln center upstairs at Coffee Aroma on guildhall st. sometime soon. I thought it a really interesting, if bizarre read and would love to discuss it with anyone wants to.

Kafka on the Shore postponed until October

Rachel and I have taken the executive decision to postpone September's book club book until October's meeting. So Kafka on the Shore will be presented by Paige and we need a volunteer host. Anyone?

Book Club plans...

At July's meeting Judy, Paige, Heather and Diane discussed 'The Last Mughal' by William Daylrumple with special guest Margot visiting from Norway. Judi, the historian of the group did not think it would be her choice of history books and recommends 'The Aristocrats' as a better read generally, but as only Diane actually finished the book we will have to admit that the book was not well received by the group. But despite this, we enjoyed a lively discussion about imperial Britain in India and how the current religious conflicts seem to be influenced by what happened in Delhi as related in the book. I went away feeling I would like to read it.

Margot suggested that the first weekend in May would be a good time for our Norwegian friends to join us here in the UK. They would fly into Stanstead. Southwold was floated as a possible place to stay as it is a very English seaside resort town. But suggestions are welcomed and we will have a firmer date from Margot in August. A pub or B&B or a cottage are possible venues - any suggestions welcome.

We made the executive decision for September to read 'Kafka by the Shore' by Haruki Murakami, the acclaimed author of Norwegian Wood among others.

This book contains lots of magical realism and is slightly bizarre, but we hope it will prompt good discussion as Murakami drops references to Shinto, Buddhist, and Faustian drama/psychology into the novel.

September's meeting will be held at Judi Jones' home on Thursday the 13th and will be presented by Paige.

Hope to see you all there.
